Writers Workshop

Professional Development: Writers Workshop

Summer 2014: 25 teachers attended a 4-day Writing Institute 2014-15: Grade Level Teams collaborate on the design and implementation of writing units of study aligned to Common Core Standards Workshop Model: Students work as professional authors do, cycling through the stages of the writing process and receiving feedback that is essential to growth, and they write, too, as a tool for learning across the curriculum. They observe their lives and the world around them while collecting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing well-crafted narrative and expository texts.

Year 1 2013-14: Cohort 1 -12 CSS/RSS teachers participated in monthly professional development with UCLA teachers. Year 2 2014-15: Cohort 1 teacher-leaders design and facilitate PD for their grade level and for the Professional Learning Community. Cohort 2 - All teachers work directly with UCLA and Cohort 1 teacher-leaders in grade level teams.

Professional Development: Cognitively Guided Instruction

CGI Overarching Goal:  to foster students' development as problem solvers who bring skill and confidence to mathematical situations Guiding Principle: children bring intuitive knowledge of mathematics to problem solving situations Teaching Approach:  to elicit children's mathematical thinking and use it as the basis for instructional decisions

Project Lead The Way - LAUNCH for 4th-5th Graders

4th Grade: Energy - Collisions and Conversion Student exploration of mechanisms will include investigations of how mechanisms change energy by transferring direction, speed, type of movement, and force. As students learn about forms of energy, they identify the conversion of energy between forms and the energy transfer required to move energy from place to place. 5th Grade: Robotics and Automation Student exploration of robotics will include ways that robots are used in today's world and the impact of their use on society and the environment.
