Why it works
In the fall students make passports to use throughout the school year. Every time they read a book, the teacher or librarian stamps their passports. Passport pages can represent different genres. Students must read a book from each genre to get a stamp on every page. Other passport themes could include setting, type of main character, sub-genres, etc. This could be a school-wide contest culminating in a prize drawing for students with completed passports.
Motivates students to read new genres or themes
Small books of paper or passport printables (see below for link) Stamp and ink
Introduces students to other genres while still encouraging free choice
Students discover different sections of the library
Year-long project allows students to read at their own pace
