BEATING THE ODDS

SCHOOLS

43 Florida schools demonstrated success in improving the achievement level of grade 3 students with the highest risk of reading difficulty. About 70% of the schools beating the odds had higher percentages of Black students and economically disadvantaged students than the average for Florida schools.

THE STUDY

A study conducted by REL Southeast identified schools with fewer students performing at a low level of reading achievement than demographically similar schools. Five profiles illustrate how the number of schools beating the odds varied by demographic profile. Further research of identified schools may provide insight into successful strategies and practices to support schools with low reading achievement scores.

PROFILE BREAKDOWN OF SCHOOLS BEATING THE ODDS

Thirty schools with high percentages of Black students and economically disadvantaged students (Profile 3) were found to be beating the odds. Another 13 schools with different demographic profiles were also found to be beating the odds. Pairing schools with similar demographics based on their profile numbers would allow successful schools to mentor struggling schools with similar demographic characteristics.
